Tips for this list
- Share the driving, and plan a stop every two hours or so. A long stretch with no breaks is where the day goes wrong.
- Pack in the order you will need things: snack bag and water within reach, overnight bag on top, big luggage underneath.
- Fill the tank when it gets to a quarter in remote areas, not when the light comes on.
- Keep a small bag with one change of clothes and a toothbrush so you can leave the case in the car for a night.
Questions
What should I check on the car before a road trip?
The tyres (pressure and tread), the oil and coolant, screenwash and lights. If you are unsure, a garage can do it quickly. For a hire car the company is responsible for its condition, so photograph it and report anything you see.
How many clothes for a two-week road trip?
About a week's worth plus a laundry stop. The list caps tops at seven and bottoms at five, which holds for longer trips too.
Do I need a warning triangle and a vest abroad?
Some countries require them in every car and fine you if missing. Rules differ and change, so check the official rules for each country on your route; with a hire car ask the company what is supplied.
