Cold weather and outdoor trips

Lists for trips outdoors in the cold or in a tent, where what you wear and sleep in decides the trip.

How to choose

Choose by where you will sleep. The ski trip list assumes a chalet, hotel or apartment with a heated room, so the weight goes into layers, gloves, goggles and boots. It rebuilds for skiing, snowboarding or a week with no lifts, and for your own equipment or hire.

The family camping weekend list assumes you sleep in a tent next to the car. It counts sleeping bags, mats, chairs and plates from the group size, because the weight there is in the kit and not the clothes. It also adds items for wet and cold weather, cooking on site and electric hookup.

Both lists keep to gear and comfort. For anything that depends on local conditions, such as chains, stoves, fires and equipment rules, they tell you to check the resort or site rules rather than assume.
