Tips for this list
- Pitch before dark and put the tent door away from the prevailing wind; the first hour sets the whole trip.
- Pack in the order you will need things: the tent and the lantern last in the car and first out.
- Keep sleeping bags in dry bags inside the car boot, not in the tent, until the pitch is ready.
- Plan one cooked meal per day and a simple cold backup, so a wet evening does not mean missing dinner.
Questions
How many sleeping bags and mats do we need?
One of each per person. The list counts them from the group size, up to eight people. Sleeping mats matter more for warmth than the bag because the ground draws heat away.
Can I use a stove or open fire at the campsite?
That is up to the site and the local rules. Check the booking page or ask at reception before packing a stove, barbecue or fire pit, and follow any fire restrictions in force.
What should I do about water?
Find out where the nearest tap is before you arrive. A 10 litre container is a sensible size for a family, and one reusable bottle per person covers day trips.
