Tips for this list
- Pack a small amount and plan a washing day every week. The same four tops that work for ten days work for ten weeks.
- Pack your pack so you can find your things by touch, with the heavy items near your back.
- Keep a second small bag with one outfit and the documents; it comes with you on the night bus.
- Leave behind anything you would be upset to lose: jewellery, a laptop you do not need or a second pair of anything.
Questions
What size backpack do I need for a long trip?
The smaller the better: pick the smallest one that holds your list comfortably. A pack you can carry for an hour is usable; a pack that fits as hand luggage also avoids lost bags and long waits at a carousel.
How many clothes for a month away?
The same as for two weeks. The list holds the number of tops at six at most and relies on a weekly wash, in a sink or a laundrette.
Do I need my own padlock for hostel lockers?
Often yes. Many hostels have lockers but ask guests to bring a lock, and hire or sell one at the desk. Packing two small combination or key locks is a safe default.
